Language & Literacy
Language and Literacy are a big deal with our children who are deaf/hard of hearing. This section of the website should guide you to understanding what challenges they face and how to help them. We will begin with a few definitions (definition support from Merriam Webster):
-
Communication is the sharing of an idea or message from one person to another through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior. Communication can be verbal or non-verbal. Verbal communication is when you use words to communicate. Nonverbal communication is when you use other behaviors to communicate, such as pointing, eye contact, or gesturing.
-
Language is the method, system, or mode, that enables communication between people by the use of conventionalized signs, sounds, gestures or marks that have understood meanings. Different regions, cultures, and communities have different languages.
-
Literacy can be another term used for reading and refers to the ability to read and write.
